FACTORS THAT CONTRIBUTE TO KNEE PAIN

  • Arthritis
  • Physical Injury/Trauma
  • Long Periods of Standing
  • High Impact from Repetitive Movements
  • Aging
  • Obesity/Overweight
  • Daily Wear and Tear

PATIENTS WITH PREVIOUS KNEE INJURIES

That have been treated improperly will also increase the chance of chronic knee problems. If knee pain is not treated properly it will eventually cause the body to develop muscular imbalances as we adjust and compensate with unnatural movement patterns. These muscular imbalances if untreated can also trigger the development of pain in the hips and lower back.

Neck Pain Relief

Neck pain is very common among Americans. Many people spend hours a day hunched over the computer at work. This constant hunch can place shoulders out of alignment, which over time creates muscular imbalances in the body leading to neck and shoulder pain. Posture irregularities along with wear and tear arthritis can also create neck pain.

Mainly neck pain will start off as a minor ache or slight pain. If these aches and pains continue and are not properly treated they may develop into a more serious condition. Symptoms of sharp shooting pain throughout the neck can arise over time. In some cases, numbness and loss of strength down the arms through the hands can occur.

NECK PAIN TREATMENTS

Neck Pain can also come suddenly from excessive force or stress placed on the neck. Injury can be very painful but will become even more painful and problematic if not properly treated.

HealthStar provides a number of options to stop pain and prevent it from coming back. Below are listed some of our neck pain treatments.

SPINAL ADJUSTMENTS

Regular spinal adjustments put the body in correct posture alignment and helps to relieve muscle strain.

The pain treatment specialists at HealthStar will identify the source of the pain. Once our experts identify the source of the pain we can provide a customized pain program designed for specifically for the patient’s pain needs. Contact HealthStar for the best in pain management care.

Pain Relief Treatments for Herniated and Bulging Discs

Our spines are made up of vertebrae; small bones located in the spine that are separated by spinal discs. Spinal discs have a strong exterior layer and contain a soft jelly-like fluid inside them. This soft interior creates a “sponginess” which can absorb impact and force for the spinal column, while the disc is protected by it’s tough exterior making the disc durable. The discs provide cushion and allow the vertebrae flexibility within the spinal column.

WHEN THE SPINAL DISC BECOMES COMPROMISED

They become inflamed and swell out, putting pressure on the nerves around the spinal cord. This is known as a slipped or bulging disc and the condition causes pain and discomfort around the back. If the condition of the disc gets worse, the discs can often burst creating a herniation. When the disc  becomes herniated it can begin to seep out of the spinal column placing pressure on nearby nerves resulting in pain. This pain is often felt associated with numbness and weakness in the arms, legs or neck.

In some cases, people with herniated discs can be unaware of the condition without feeling much pain, but most herniated discs are painful.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF HERNIATED DISC

Back Pain

Pain from the disc placing pressure on the nerves.

Affected discs in the lower back (the most common area) often result in lower back pain and shooting pain through the buttocks area.

Muscles close to affected nerves can feel weak.

Pressure placed on the nerves can cause pain in the legs and arms. If the sciatic nerve is affected pain will arise in the hip and down the leg towards the knee.

Many times numbness and slight tingling around the affected area will occur.

A woman in a blue shirt stands outdoors, holding her lower back in discomfort, with sunlight streaming through nearby trees.
A warehouse worker in a yellow safety vest clutches their lower back, looking pained while surrounded by shelves of boxes.

COMMON CAUSES OF HERNIATED DISC

Degenerating Disc Disease

Gradual aging and wear-and- tear of the disc. Over time the disc becomes weak thus limiting flexibility making them prone to slip out of position or rupture.

Lifting heavy objects with the back muscles instead of the legs, or preforming twisting motions with the back.

Although rare, sometimes the force of impact from an accident or injury can cause the discs in the back to slip or rupture.

The same movement patterns done over and over can wear down the discs in the back leading to herniation.

Disc herniation is a serious condition. Contact HealthStar to ensure the best possible treatment plan!

THE BACK IS AN EXTREMELY STRONG MUSCLE

But can also be very delicate. Improper care of the back, injury and lack of proper treatment after injury can lead to life-long pain conditions. To help avoid serious back conditions, patients should take care of their backs and be mindful of posture. Exercises can help strengthen the back muscles. If something does not feel right in the back, it is important to apply ice to the affected area and rest if the back becomes sore or injured.

Nearly, 80% of Americans suffer from back pain at some point throughout their lifetime.

LOWER BACK PAIN CAUSES

Lower back pain can happen for a number of reasons. Simple daily activities such as sitting down improperly or lifting objects in an irregular manner can aggravate nerves or displace discs in the back causing inflammation and pain. Below we have listed some of the more common reasons for lower back pain.

Muscle Strain

Muscles tighten, strain, tear or even gain small tears from overuse and strain. Untreated strains can become consistent pain issues if not properly treated.

Spinal discs act as cushions and support between the vertebrae of the spine that can “slip” position or even burst causing herniation, leading to intense nerve pain.

Disc herniation or traumatic impact can create pressure on the sciatic nerve, resulting in sharp and shooting pains. Many times this pain runs through the hip and down the legs.

Arthritis is the breakdown of cartilage in the small disc joints within the spinal column in the back. Over time, this can also cause narrowing of the space around the spinal cord.

One of the more common causes of lower back pain myofascial pain is long-lasting pain that affects the connective tissue (fascia) of muscles.

Natural aging and break down of the spinal discs. Over time the discs can lose their cushioning and result in lower back pain.

Excess weight on the body and joints apply pressure, poor posture and extra stress on the lower back resulting in lower back pain.

A doctor examines an X-ray image of a spine, analyzing its structure and alignment for medical assessment.

LOWER BACK PAIN MAY OFTEN INDICATE MORE SERIOUS MEDICAL PROBLEMS

Pain accompanied by fever or loss of bowel or bladder control, coughing with pain, and weakness in the legs can indicate pinched nerves or more serious conditions. If you are suffering from these symptoms we recommend contacting our offices as soon as possible to reduce the risk of long-term damage.

Upper Back Pain Treatments

Upper back pain is pain that occurs in the upper part of the spine and continues up the neck or down the shoulder. Upper back pain is not as common as lower back pain since the bones in this area do not flex or move as much as those in the lower back. Still, upper back pain can cause limited movements and significant discomfort when it occurs.

We provide treatments that help you experience pain relief and physical therapy modalities that help correct and sustain upper back pain relief.

A young man with tousled hair stands against a pale wall rubbing his neck with a pained expression

GENERALLY, UPPER BACK PAIN IS A RESULT OF

Muscle strain or myofascial pain. In many cases, the pain is easily relieved with trigger point therapy & trigger point injections.

Spinal joint dysfunction or inflammation can also contribute to upper back pain but can be treated by chiropractic adjustments. Adjustments to help mobilize the joint, stretch the spine and shoulders, and reduce pain.

The proper treatment for your back condition depends on your specific pain symptoms and needs. If you are suffering from pain in the upper back, please contact your nearest HealthStar for lasting pain relief.

Sciatica Treatments

Our approach to sciatica is multi-dimensional. We understand that there is not a one-size fits all approach and that each patient requires different levels of care. This patient-centric approach offers our team of doctors and providers options that many clinics cannot offer.

In most cases, there is a relationship with a disc misalignment or a bulging disc in the lumbar region of the back. The budging disc causes sciatica pain as a result of pressure on the nerve. Once we re-align the disc the sciatic nerve will calm and pain will subside. Here are two examples of care based on severity.

A healthcare professional examines a patient's back in a clinical setting, surrounded by medical supplies and equipment.
A woman in a blue shirt stands outdoors, holding her lower back in discomfort, with sunlight streaming through nearby trees.

SEVERE SCIATIC PAIN

For severe conditions we may utilize nerve block injection protocols to quickly calm the nerves and then work to balance the pressure on the nerve (re-align the disc) with chiropractic adjustments, massage, and physical therapy.

This approach provides excellent results and is responsive to the acute pain patients experience with sciatica.

MILD TO MODERATE SCIATIC NERVE PAIN

Those suffering from neuropathy generally feel numbness, tingling, stabbing and burning pain sensations in the hands and feet.

Motor functions of the nerve may be damaged causing muscle weakness, cramping, and spasms as well as a lack of coordination and poor balance.

Neuropathy Pain Relief

Neuropathy comes from an assortment of disorders that affect the peripheral nervous system. The nerves become damaged and cause pain and weakness throughout the body. Pain is mainly felt in the hands and feet but can also affect other parts of the body.

“Over 20 million people in the United States suffer from peripheral neuropathy.”

WHAT CAUSES NEUROPATHY?

Neuropathy is caused by damage in specific nerve pathways. Usually, illness, disease or constant health issues damage the nerves. Common conditions are diabetes, back problems, certain medications, chemotherapy and diseases.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?

Those suffering from neuropathy generally feel numbness, tingling, stabbing and burning pain sensations in the hands and feet. Motor functions of the nerve may be damaged causing muscle weakness, cramping, and spasms as well as a lack of coordination and poor balance.

Treatment Options Available at

In the past neuropathy treatments have relied heavily on medications, which cause patients significant side effects and little to no actual relief from symptoms. Only recently has there been a promising breakthrough to help reduce the symptoms of neuropathy with lasting results.

Electgro Analgesia

Electrodes are placed to the affected areas of the hands and feet to stimulate nerves that send pain signals to the brain by overriding the pain signal with varying electrical pulses to the nerve, which slows its firing. This is known as depolarization and it reduces the pain signals to the brain that are sent to the brain providing pain relief to the patient.

Works to improve the function of the specific blood vessels. The blood vessels feed nerves by sending radiant infrared energy deep into the walls of the blood vessels and tissues that surround the injured nerves. This improves the elasticity and function of the blood vessels. As the blood vessels become healthier the nerves begin to thrive. Additional therapies designed to improve strength and balance are also provided during a treatment session.

Used when nerve interference is a contributing factor to the numbness, burning, tingling and/or pins and needles feeling in extremities. Manipulation is quick, easy and known to help restore proper nerve flow.

CHRONIC PAIN IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST BURDENS…

Americans face, with over 100 million Americans suffering from it. The daily struggle against chronic pain can wear you down both physically and emotionally. Chronic pain can be mild or completely unbearable to handle. It can be constant or come and go episodically. Pain can range from an inconvenient annoyance to completely incapacitating.

Many times chronic pain develops from a traumatic injury, infection or an ongoing cause of pain. However, other sufferers develop it without past injury.

Emotionally chronic pain can cause anxiety, stress, depression, anger and even tiredness. It can also wear down the body, sometimes decreasing the body’s ability to produce natural pain relievers. Over time the body can let down its guard, suppressing the immune system
and leaving the body vulnerable to illness.

THE HEALTHSTAR WAY

At HealthStar we understand the complex relationship between mind and body associated with chronic pain and address both aspects of the condition. We are comprised of medical doctors, chiropractors, and physical therapists. This multidisciplinary approach allows us the agility to treat all chronic pain conditions with outstanding results.

WHY DO WE EXPERIENCE HEADACHES AND MIGRAINES?

Headaches and migraines appear for a wide variety of reasons; the most common headaches are mild, pass quickly and are not life-threatening. However, sometimes headaches and migraines can be a sign of other greater conditions such as diseases or illness. Proper diagnosis of chronic headaches and migraines can be critical to your achieving proper pain relief. Below are some example of conditions migraines and headaches can sometimes be signs of.

EXAMPLES

Some migraine headaches may predispose you to a stroke.
Some headaches may be a sign of glaucoma.
Some headaches are the first sign of a growing brain tumor (rare).

Our treatment specialists at HealthStar will help you identify
the cause of your migraine and headache pain. We then isolate the root cause
of the pain and develop a treatment program designed specifically for your
needs. Stop living with pain. Get help with HealthStar.

Fibromyalgia Pain Relief

Fibromyalgia is a difficult condition to live with as pain begins to appear all over the body. Fibromyalgia symptoms spread throughout muscles and joints and can cause fatigue, loss of sleep, issues with memory and trouble with moods. Fibromyalgia has been known to heighten the body’s sense of painful sensations by changing how the brain processes pain.

Often patients begin to feel symptoms of fibromyalgia after intense trauma to the body such as surgery, infections, intense physical accident, or great psychological stress. In other cases, symptoms develop over time without an intense event. At HealthStar we treat a variety of pain related conditions. To treat all of these conditions we offer comprehensive programs to make sure each patient gets the best treatment suited for their condition and individual needs.

A woman in a white shirt sits at a desk, cradling her shoulder in discomfort, with a laptop and notes visible in front of her.

SYMPTOMS OF FIBROMYALGIA

Women typically develop fibromyalgia more often than men. Sufferers of fibromyalgia may also experience feelings of depression, anxiety, and frequent headaches.

Fibromyalgia pain is often described as a dull ache in the muscles all over the body. Sufferers of fibromyalgia often experience pain extremely easily. A touch, a grab of the arm, or even bumping into something can be extremely painful. Patients with fibromyalgia also have tender points where they feel intense pain. These points are located in the shoulders, neck, upper chest, elbows, hips, and knees.

Along with the symptoms of fibromyalgia, people often have a constant feeling of fatigue accompanied by trouble sleeping. This constant fatigue and sleep problems serve to magnify the pain symptoms and also affect mood.

CAUSES OF FIBROMYALGIA

Most researchers believe fibromyalgia is developed from intense trauma to the patient’s body; this could be an impact from a car accident or powerful blow. Fibromyalgia can also appear from great emotional trauma; many sufferers of post-traumatic stress have also shown a link with fibromyalgia. Disease and illnesses can also serve as a trigger. It has been shown that genetics may have some role in the development of fibromyalgia in some cases as well; certain genetic mutations can make individuals more susceptible to the condition.

Fibromyalgia can be a very tough disease to live with but regular exercise along with stress relief and pain relief treatments from HealthStar can help to severely reduced symptoms. The most important thing for sufferers of fibromyalgia is to be able to perform daily activities with minimal pain. At HealthStar we make every effort to help our patients reach that goal. We understand the burden fibromyalgia can place on a person and want to help. Call to set up a consultation.

Arthritis Treatment

Do you have trouble moving around? Do you feel pain constant pain and stiffness throughout your joints? You may be suffering from arthritis. Arthritis causes inflammation and swelling in the joints of the body. The swollen joints can suffer from nerve damage over time if not properly treated.

A study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has stated that about 1 in every 5 American adults has doctor-diagnosed arthritis and that number is expected to increase over the coming years.

An elderly person's hands clasped together, highlighting their aged skin and intricate details while softly illuminated by natural light.
An elderly person gently holds their hands together, appearing contemplative, in a softly lit, cozy living room setting.

The main symptoms of arthritis are joint pain and stiffness. These symptoms will get worse with age. The most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis is mainly caused by day-to-day wear and tear on the joints. On the other hand, rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder. Aside from the two main forms of arthritis, other types of arthritis can also be formed due to uric acid crystals, infections or even diseases, such as psoriasis or lupus.

The most common symptoms of arthritis occur in the proximity around the joints.

SYMPTOMS MAY INCLUDE

Pain | Stiffness | Swelling | Redness | Decreased Range of Motion

WHAT CAUSES ARTHRITIS?

To understand how arthritis is caused we must first understand how the body and joints move. Ligaments hold our bones together. These ligaments act like elastic bands while keeping the bones in place. Muscles relax or contract to make the joint move. Cartilage covers the bone’s surface to stop bones from rubbing directly against each other. The covering of cartilage allows the joint to work smoothly and painlessly. Arthritis is caused by the wear-and-tear damage to your joint’s cartilage — the hard, slick coating on the ends of bones. Enough damage can result in bone grinding directly on bone, which causes pain and restricted movement. This wear and tear can occur over many years, or it can be hastened by a joint injury or infection. The pain and stiffness in joints is a result of arthritis.

Sufferers of arthritis conditions often avoid joint movement because of the pain during motion. At HealthStar we will work with you to reduce joint stiffness without damaging the joint. We provide treatments to help you develop the strength to perform daily activities without pain.

Arthritis patients who are physically active generally enjoy better health, are happier, live longer, and experience day-to-day improvements in sleep, pain associated with movement, daily functioning, and energy levels.

TMJ Treatment

The Temporomandibular joint (jaw joint) can be the source of face pain and jaw soreness. Patients with jaw and face soreness are often diagnosed with Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD). TMJ pain is when you feel pain in your jaw joint and the surrounding muscles. TMJ can be just a nuisance — or it can be a life-altering issue.

The exact cause of TMJ pain is hard to determine but is often due to a combination of problems like arthritis, jaw injuries and even stress. TMJ conditions occur as a result of problems with the jaw, jaw joint and surrounding facial muscles that control chewing and moving of the jaw. For example, people who frequently clench or grind their teeth commonly develop TMD.

TMJ Symptoms

  • Pain in the Jaw (near the joint)
  • Tight or Sore Jaw or Neck Muscles
  • Popping/Clicking of the Jaw
  • Ear Pain
  • Shoulder Pain
  • Headaches
  • Ringing or Popping Sounds in Ears
  • Blurred Vision

Treating TMJ or TMD

HealthStar’s goal is to provide pain relief by fixing the problem. We do this by diagnosing your TMJ condition and locating the root cause for your pain.

TMJ conditions become more painful if untreated. The disorder erodes the jaw disc which can cause joint displacement. The erosion and displacement will eventually develop into a degenerative tissue disorder like arthritis. It is important to treat TMJ early to prevent a more serious chronic pain condition.

But if the pain is reoccurring it can begin to negatively impact your life. Many clinics will want to use highly invasive procedures for elbow pain. These procedures are often expensive and unnecessary. At HealthStar we offer various treatments for elbow pain that are minimally or completely non-invasive. Our treatments help reduce pain, increase mobility and strengthen muscles around the joint. Our treatments will help to tremendously reduce or eliminate your elbow pain without the need for painful surgery.

USUALLY ELBOW PAIN WILL START OUT AS A DULL ACHE

And develop into a sharp piercing pain. Elbow pain is generally caused by overuse, injuries, and repetitive movement. This causes soft tissue inflammation like tendonitis.

Our experienced pain management team understands that every back pain patient is different, which is why our treatment programs are customized specifically for the individual. This can include a combination of medical procedures and therapeutic protocols.

Radiculopathy

Radiculopathy is a medical condition caused by compression or irritation of a spinal nerve root — the point where a nerve exits the spinal column. When a nerve root becomes pinched or inflamed, it can lead to pain and neurological symptoms that radiate along the path of that nerve.

A person with long, dark hair is holding their neck, appearing to express discomfort, in a softly lit room with a desk in the background.
A man in a gray t-shirt stands outdoors, holding his lower back, showing discomfort amidst a sunlit park setting.

What Is Radiculopathy?

Radiculopathy isn’t a disease itself but a symptom complex that results from pressure on a spinal nerve. This pressure can occur anywhere along the spine, and depending on the location, different nerve roots are affected.

Most often, radiculopathy occurs in:

  • Cervical spine (neck) – causing symptoms in the neck, shoulders, arms, or hands
  • Thoracic spine (mid-back) – causing symptoms around the chest or torso
  • Lumbar spine (lower back) – often associated with symptoms in the lower back, hips, legs, or feet

Common Causes

Radiculopathy stems from anything that puts pressure on a spinal nerve root. Frequent underlying causes include:

  • Herniated or bulging discs – disc material pressing on nerves
  • Degenerative changes and spondylosis (arthritis of the spine)
  • Bone spurs (osteophytes) that narrow nerve exit spaces
  • Spinal stenosis — narrowing of the spinal canal
  • Trauma or injury
  • Less commonly, infections, tumors, or other structural abnormalities can contribute

Symptoms to Watch For

Symptoms occur along the nerve’s pathway and vary by the region involved. They can include:

  • Pain — sharp, burning, or radiating pain into arms or legs
  • Numbness or tingling (“pins and needles”)
  • Muscle weakness in the affected limb
  • Loss of reflexes or decreased sensation
  • In severe cases, coordination changes or difficulty walking

Symptoms often worsen with certain movements or positions that increase pressure on the nerve.

Chiropractic Care for Sports Injuries

Whether you’re a competitive athlete, a weekend golfer, a runner, or just enjoy staying active, sports injuries can slow you down and keep you from doing what you love. Chiropractic care offers a natural, drug-free approach to helping the body recover, restore mobility, and improve performance.

Our goal is simple: Get you back in the game safely and efficiently.

How Chiropractic Care Helps Sports Injuries

Sports injuries often involve more than just the painful area. Misalignment, joint restriction, muscle imbalance, and inflammation can all contribute to prolonged recovery.

Chiropractic care focuses on:

  • Restoring proper joint motion
  • Reducing inflammation
  • Improving nervous system function
  • Enhancing mobility and flexibility
  • Supporting faster healing
  • Preventing future injuries

By correcting underlying biomechanical issues, we don’t just treat the symptoms — we address the cause.

Common Sports Injuries We Treat

1. Sprains & Strains

Muscle and ligament injuries are extremely common in sports. Chiropractic adjustments combined with soft tissue therapy can help reduce pain, improve healing, and restore range of motion.

2. Lower Back Pain

Twisting, lifting, and impact sports often lead to lumbar strain or disc irritation. Chiropractic care helps relieve pressure, reduce inflammation, and improve spinal alignment.

3. Neck Injuries

Contact sports and repetitive motion can cause stiffness, headaches, or limited mobility. Gentle adjustments can help restore motion and relieve tension.

4. Shoulder Injuries

Rotator cuff injuries, impingement, and instability are common in baseball, tennis, swimming, and weight training. Chiropractic care improves joint mechanics and supports muscular balance.

5. Knee Pain

Running, jumping, and cutting movements often stress the knees. Misalignment in the hips, pelvis, or ankles can contribute to knee pain. Addressing the full kinetic chain helps improve recovery.

6. Tennis Elbow / Golfer’s Elbow

Overuse injuries respond well to targeted joint adjustments and soft tissue techniques that reduce stress on irritated tendons.

Why Athletes Choose Chiropractic Care

Many professional and collegiate athletes incorporate chiropractic care into their regular training routine because it:

  • Enhances performance
  • Improves reaction time
  • Increases flexibility
  • Supports injury prevention
  • Reduces reliance on medications
  • Promotes faster recovery

Chiropractic care is not just about pain relief — it’s about optimizing how your body moves and performs.

A Natural Approach to Recovery

Unlike medications that only mask pain, chiropractic care works with the body’s natural healing process. When joints move properly and the nervous system functions optimally, the body can heal more efficiently.

For athletes of all ages, this means:

  • Less downtime
  • Better mobility
  • Stronger overall performance

Sprains & Strains

Sprains and strains are common musculoskeletal injuries that affect the ligaments, muscles, or tendons. While they are often grouped together, they involve different tissues and can vary widely in severity.

A young man in athletic wear kneels on a track, holding his ankle in discomfort, possibly due to an injury.

What Are Sprains & Strains?

  • Sprains occur when ligaments (the tissues connecting bones at a joint) are stretched or torn.
  • Strains involve injury to muscles or tendons, which connect muscles to bones.

These injuries frequently affect the ankles, knees, wrists, back, and neck.

Common Causes

  • Sudden twisting or impact
  • Overuse or repetitive motion
  • Lifting improperly
  • Sports or physical activity injuries
  • Slips, falls, or accidents

Symptoms

  • Pain and tenderness
  • Swelling or bruising
  • Limited range of motion
  • Muscle spasms or weakness

Treatment Options

Most sprains and strains respond well to conservative care, including:

  • Rest and activity modification
  • Physical therapy to restore strength and flexibility
  • Anti-inflammatory medications
  • Supportive bracing when needed

Early treatment helps prevent chronic pain or recurring injury.

Degenerative Disc Disease

Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD) is a condition in which the spinal discs gradually wear down over time. While often associated with aging, it can also result from injury or repetitive spinal stress.

A doctor in a white coat examines a knee joint model, using a tool to highlight features in a clinical setting.

What Is Degenerative Disc Disease?

Spinal discs act as cushions between vertebrae. As discs lose hydration and elasticity, they become less effective at absorbing shock, which can lead to pain and reduced mobility.

Common Causes

  • Natural aging and disc dehydration
  • Repetitive stress or heavy lifting
  • Prior spinal injury
  • Genetic predisposition

Symptoms

  • Chronic neck or low back pain
  • Pain that worsens with sitting, bending, or twisting
  • Radiating pain into the arms or legs
  • Stiffness or limited mobility
A healthcare professional examines a patient's back, offering support as the patient grips their lower back, indicating discomfort.

Treatment Options

Treatment focuses on symptom management and spinal support:

  • Physical therapy and strengthening exercises
  • Pain-relief and anti-inflammatory medications
  • Lifestyle and posture modifications
  • In advanced cases, interventional or surgical evaluation

Many patients manage symptoms successfully with non-surgical care.

Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction / Pain

Sacroiliac (SI) Joint Dysfunction occurs when the joint connecting the spine to the pelvis becomes inflamed, stiff, or unstable, leading to lower back and hip pain.

Anatomical illustration showing a person experiencing lower back pain, highlighting the spinal column and nerves.

What Is SI Joint Dysfunction?

The sacroiliac joints help transfer weight between the upper body and legs. Dysfunction occurs when these joints move too much or too little, irritating nearby nerves and tissues.

Common Causes

  • Pregnancy and childbirth
  • Trauma or falls
  • Arthritis or inflammation
  • Leg length differences
  • Repetitive stress to the lower back

Symptoms

  • Lower back pain, often on one side
  • Pain in the hips, buttocks, or groin
  • Pain that worsens with standing, walking, or climbing stairs
  • Stiffness or instability

Treatment Options

Treatment is typically conservative and may include:

  • Physical therapy focused on pelvic stability
  • Anti-inflammatory medications
  • Activity modification
  • Targeted injections for pain relief

Proper diagnosis is essential, as SI joint pain often mimics other spinal conditions.

Scoliosis

Scoliosis is a condition characterized by an abnormal sideways curvature of the spine. It can develop during childhood or adulthood and may progress over time.

A person analyzes an X-ray of the spine, using a pen to highlight specific areas on the image while holding a model of a spine.

What Is Scoliosis?

Instead of a straight alignment, the spine curves in an “S” or “C” shape. The severity of scoliosis can range from mild to significant and may affect posture, balance, and spinal function.

Common Causes

  • Idiopathic (unknown cause, most common)
  • Congenital spinal abnormalities
  • Degenerative changes in adulthood
  • Neuromuscular conditions

Symptoms

  • Uneven shoulders or hips
  • Visible spinal curvature
  • Back pain or stiffness
  • Muscle fatigue
  • In severe cases, breathing difficulties

Treatment Options

Treatment depends on age, curve severity, and symptoms:

  • Observation and monitoring
  • Physical therapy to improve strength and mobility
  • Pain management strategies
  • Bracing or surgical evaluation in advanced cases

Early detection helps reduce progression and long-term complications.

What Is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

The carpal tunnel is a narrow passageway in the wrist. When tissues within this tunnel swell or become irritated, they can compress the median nerve, leading to hand and finger symptoms.

Common Causes

  • Repetitive hand or wrist movements
  • Prolonged computer or device use
  • Wrist injuries
  • Pregnancy or fluid retention
  • Medical conditions such as diabetes or arthritis

Symptoms

  • Numbness or tingling in the thumb, index, and middle fingers
  • Hand weakness or dropping objects
  • Wrist pain that may radiate up the arm
  • Symptoms often worse at night

Treatment Options

Treatment depends on symptom severity:

  • Wrist splinting and activity modification
  • Physical or occupational therapy
  • Anti-inflammatory medications
  • Corticosteroid injections
  • Surgical intervention in severe or persistent cases

Early treatment can prevent permanent nerve damage.
