Repetitive strain injuries (RSI) are common among people who work in manufacturing or with computer systems on a daily basis, particularly over the course of years. Repetitive strain injuries are injuries of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems that can be caused by doing repetitive tasks, forceful movements, or maintaining awkward positions.  They may affect muscles, tendons, nerves, and soft tissues and symptoms include pain, numbness, tingling, or stiffness. Common places to get repetitive strain injuries are in the knees, neck, back, and wrists.

But why do some people develop RSI while working on a factory floor for 25 years but others doing the same task do not? If a patient is diagnosed with an RSI, often there are also misalignments (known as subluxations) in the spine that are exacerbating or even causing the injury by placing pressure on the nerves.

A chiropractor can diagnose a repetitive strain injury and can help to correct the problem both by treating the patient, and by suggesting lifestyle changes. If an RSI is caused by a single repetitive task that can be identified, your chiropractor may suggest ergonomics in the workplace or at home, or he may suggest that you stop the activity until the injury is healed. Your chiropractor will treat the root of your injury if it’s in the spine just as he treats the symptoms, and may suggest massage or acupuncture. Lifestyle changes are often necessary to reach a full recovery and prevent future injury.
