Chiropractic Care for Heart Health

Recent studies confirm what chiropractors have always believed: adjusting the body to get it into alignment improves circulation and heart health.

The atlas adjustment for better bloodflow

Chiropractic treatment is able to reduce hypertension, according to a study released in 2007, in turn reducing the risk of heart attacks.

The study split 50 individuals who had recently developed high blood pressure into two groups. Patients in one group were given manual therapy by a chiropractor that included an atlas adjustment intended to enhance circulation. The other group was given a bogus, placebo treatment. Two months later, researchers checked blood pressure readings and found that the group treated with chiropractic had much lower blood pressure on average than the sham group.

The director of the study, the University of Chicago’s George Bakris, MD, explained how powerful these treatments are by comparing to results for prescription drugs. “This procedure has the effect of not one, but two blood-pressure medications given in combination,” he said. “We saw no side effects and no problems.”

How chiropractic therapy can protect against heart failure

Chiropractic care should generally improve your circulatory health. Let’s look specifically at how the atlas adjustment was effective in the study.

The adjustment simply brings the atlas vertebra at the top of your spine into alignment with the rest of the vertebral column.

Among the patients who received the genuine chiropractic manipulation, the reading was 14 mm and 8 mm lower for systolic and diastolic blood pressure, respectively.

Dr. Bakris was actually shocked by the findings. “When the statistician brought me the data, I actually didn’t believe it,” he said. “But we checked for everything, and there it was.”

Benefits: lowering heart rate, chest pain & anxiety

Studies also show strong evidence that chiropractic reduces the prevalence of heart attacks by improving patient bloodflow. A study conducted by Palmer Chiropractic College researchers determined that chiropractic care lowers heart rate and alleviates chest pain.

Chiropractic treatment also reduces anxiety, according to research published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics.
